Dental emergency in Ambernath East

Severe toothache, facial swelling, a knocked-out tooth, or bleeding that will not stop. What to do in the next ten minutes, and how to be seen this evening.

Tuesday to Sunday, 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Closed on Mondays.

Go to a hospital, not a dental clinic, if any of these apply

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling spreading towards the eye or down into the neck
  • Bleeding that has not stopped after 20 minutes of firm pressure
  • A high fever alongside facial swelling
  • A blow to the face with a suspected broken jaw
  • Any head injury with confusion, vomiting or blackout

A dental infection that has started to close an airway is a medical emergency and a dental chair is the wrong place for it. Go to the nearest casualty department now. Call us afterwards and we will take over the dental side of it.

First, which one is this

Is it urgent, or does it just feel urgent?

Pain is a poor guide to how serious a dental problem is. Some of the most urgent things barely hurt, and some of the most painful things can safely wait until tomorrow.

Come in the same evening

  • Swelling of the gum, cheek or jaw
  • Pain severe enough to stop you sleeping
  • A permanent tooth knocked out or pushed out of position
  • A tooth broken with a bleeding or exposed centre
  • Bleeding that restarts hours after an extraction
  • A pimple on the gum with a bad taste discharging from it

Message us and we will tell you

  • An ache that comes and goes over days
  • Sensitivity to cold that stops within seconds
  • A crown or filling that has come out but does not hurt
  • A chip with no pain and no sharp edge
  • Food packing into the same gap repeatedly
  • A wisdom tooth that is sore but not swollen

Book normally, this can wait

  • Bleeding when you brush, with no pain
  • Staining or discolouration
  • A rough edge you have had for months
  • Wanting a check-up because it has been a while
  • Cosmetic questions of any kind
  • A cleaning that is overdue

If you are not sure which column you are in, that is itself a good reason to message. Describing it takes a minute and costs nothing, and we would far rather tell you it can wait than have you sit on something that cannot.

Before you get here

What to do in the next ten minutes

None of this fixes the problem. All of it makes the problem easier to fix once you are in the chair, and in the first case it is the difference between saving the tooth and not.

A permanent tooth has been knocked out

The single most time-critical thing in dentistry. Aim to be with us inside the hour.

  • Pick it up by the crown, the part you chew with. Never touch the root.
  • Do not scrub it, do not use soap, and do not wrap it in tissue.
  • If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or in the patient's own saliva.
  • If you can, push it gently back into the socket the right way round and bite on a clean cloth to hold it.
  • If you cannot, keep it in a cup of milk. Milk, not water: water destroys the surface cells that let it reattach.

Never try to reseat a child's baby tooth. Pushing it back can damage the permanent tooth forming above it. Bring the child in, bring the tooth, and leave it out.

Severe toothache

The aim is to get through the next few hours without making it worse.

  • Take whatever painkiller you would normally take for pain, at the dose on the packet.
  • Rinse gently with warm salty water.
  • Sleep with your head propped higher than usual. Lying flat increases the pressure and the throbbing with it.
  • Avoid very hot, very cold and very sweet things on that side.

Never hold an aspirin against the gum. It burns the tissue and adds a chemical ulcer to the problem you already have.

The face or gum is swollen

Swelling means an infection has left the tooth and is now in the surrounding tissue. This is the one to act on today.

  • Message or call now rather than waiting to see if it settles overnight.
  • Keep your head raised, including while sleeping.
  • Do not apply heat to the outside of the face. It encourages the infection to spread.
  • Do not try to burst it.

If the swelling starts to close your eye, reaches your neck, or you begin to have trouble swallowing or breathing, stop and go to a hospital.

Bleeding after an extraction

Some oozing for a few hours is normal. Bleeding that genuinely will not stop is not.

  • Roll clean gauze or a clean cotton handkerchief into a firm pad, place it over the socket and bite down hard.
  • Hold it for a full 20 minutes without lifting it to check. Checking is what restarts it.
  • Do not rinse, spit, smoke or use a straw for the rest of the day.
  • Stay upright and avoid anything strenuous.

If it is still soaking through after two full 20 minute attempts, call us, and go to a hospital if you cannot reach us.

A broken or chipped tooth

Whether it needs treating tonight depends on how deep the break goes, which is not something you can judge from the outside.

  • Keep any fragment in milk and bring it with you.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free chewing gum so it stops cutting your tongue.
  • Chew on the other side until you are seen.

A pink or red dot in the middle of the broken surface means the nerve is exposed. That one needs to be seen the same day.

A crown or filling has come out

Usually uncomfortable rather than urgent, but the tooth underneath is now unprotected.

  • Keep the crown. It can often be recemented, which is a much shorter appointment than remaking it.
  • Rinse it and keep it somewhere safe rather than in a pocket.
  • Avoid chewing on that side.
  • Sensitivity to cold on the bare tooth is expected and is not, on its own, a reason to panic.

Never glue it back with household adhesive. It is not safe in the mouth and it usually means the crown cannot be reused.

At the appointment

What happens when you get here

An emergency appointment has one job, and it is not to sell you a treatment plan while you are in pain.

  1. 1

You are seen ahead of the routine list

Pain and swelling go first. That is the whole point of holding slots back.

  2. 2

We find out what is actually causing it

Usually a digital X-ray, which takes seconds and appears on the screen beside you. Pain refers along the jaw and the tooth that hurts is often not the tooth that is the problem, so this step is not skippable.

  3. 3

We get you out of pain

Whatever that takes on the night: draining an infection, opening and dressing a tooth, smoothing a broken edge, or a temporary filling. This is the part that is not postponed.

  4. 4

We tell you what comes next, and what it costs

In writing, before anything further is started, and after the pain has gone rather than during it. If a decision can reasonably wait a few days so you can think about it, we will say so.

Common questions

Asked in an emergency

The clinic is open Tuesday to Sunday, 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and closed on Mondays. If you are reading this during opening hours, message or call and we will tell you straight away whether to come in. Outside those hours, still send a message describing what has happened. It will be answered as early as possible and you will be given the first available slot.

Yes. Some time is left unbooked each evening for exactly this. It is not unlimited, so the earlier in the day you message, the more likely it is you are seen that same evening rather than the next.

Yes. You do not need to be an existing patient and there is nothing to register for in advance. Message or call, describe the problem, and come in.

Not unless it is genuinely the only option, and not without explaining why first. Most emergencies are about getting you out of pain and controlling an infection, which is usually a separate step from deciding what happens to the tooth. Those two decisions do not have to be made in the same appointment, and a decision made while you are in pain is rarely the one you would make an hour later.

Send a message anyway so you are first in the queue for Tuesday. If the pain is severe, if there is facial swelling, or if anything in the red panel above applies, do not wait for us. Go to the nearest hospital casualty department the same day.

Nothing can be quoted honestly before the problem has been looked at, because the cost depends entirely on what is causing it. What you are told at the appointment is the full plan and the full cost, in writing, before anything is started.
