A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a tooth entirely, restoring its shape and strength. It is what we use when a tooth is too broken down for a filling to hold, after a root canal on a back tooth, or when a large old restoration is failing.

A bridge uses the same technology to replace a missing tooth. Crowns on the teeth either side of the gap support a replacement tooth between them, and the whole unit is cemented in permanently, with nothing to take out at night.

We work with zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal and full-ceramic options. Which one suits you depends on where the tooth sits, how much force it takes, and how much it matters aesthetically. We will explain the trade-off honestly rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.

Signs you may need this

  • A large old filling that keeps chipping or falling out
  • A cracked tooth, or one that hurts on release after biting
  • A back tooth that has had a root canal
  • A missing tooth with healthy teeth on both sides of the gap
  • Severely worn-down teeth from grinding

What happens during your appointment

  1. Assessment and shade matching

We confirm the tooth can support a crown and match the shade against your neighbouring teeth in natural light.

  2. Preparation

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic to create room for the crown, removing as little structure as the material allows.

  3. Impression or digital scan

An accurate impression captures the prepared tooth and your bite, and is sent to the laboratory.

  4. Temporary crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth and keeps it looking normal while the permanent one is made.

  5. Fitting

At the second visit we check fit, contact points, bite and shade before cementing it permanently.

Why it is worth doing

  • Restores full chewing strength to a broken-down tooth
  • Protects a root-treated tooth from fracturing
  • Bridges fill a gap permanently, no removable appliance
  • Shade-matched so it disappears into your smile
  • Prevents neighbouring teeth drifting into a gap

Aftercare

  • Be careful with the temporary crown: avoid sticky food and floss out sideways rather than up
  • Some sensitivity after fitting is normal and settles
  • Clean under a bridge daily with a floss threader or interdental brush. This is essential to its lifespan
  • Come back if the bite feels high; even a fraction of a millimetre causes soreness

Crown & Bridge: common questions

The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.

Typically 10 to 15 years, and frequently longer with good hygiene. What usually fails is not the crown itself but decay in the tooth underneath it at the margin, which is why cleaning the gum line properly matters so much.

Zirconia is very strong and looks natural, making it a good all-rounder, especially for back teeth. Full-ceramic gives the best aesthetics for front teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal is a proven, more economical option. We will recommend based on the tooth's position and load, and explain why.

The preparation is done under local anaesthetic and is comfortable. Mild sensitivity between the preparation and fitting visits is normal, particularly to cold.

An implant does not involve cutting down the neighbouring teeth, and it preserves the bone, so if the adjacent teeth are healthy and untouched, an implant is usually the better long-term choice. A bridge makes sense when those neighbouring teeth already need crowns anyway, or when bone volume or medical factors rule out an implant.
