A denture replaces missing teeth with a removable appliance. A complete denture replaces a full arch; a partial denture fills in around teeth you still have, clasping onto them for support.
The difference between a denture that transforms someone's life and one that lives in a drawer is almost entirely in the fitting stages. Accurate impressions, a correctly recorded bite, and careful tooth positioning for speech and appearance take several appointments. We do not shorten that process.
For patients who have struggled with a lower denture that will not stay put, implant-supported dentures, where two or more implants hold the denture firmly in place, are worth discussing.
Signs you may need this
- Several or all teeth missing in an arch
- An old denture that has become loose or causes sore spots
- Difficulty eating or being understood when speaking
- A sunken appearance around the mouth
What happens during your appointment
Assessment
We examine the ridges, any remaining teeth and the tissue health, and discuss which type of denture suits your situation.
Primary and secondary impressions
Two stages of impressions capture the supporting tissue accurately. This is what determines retention. A denture is held by suction and fit.
Bite registration
The relationship between your upper and lower jaws is recorded, along with the correct facial height.
Try-in
A wax version with teeth set in place is tried in so you can see and approve the appearance and shade before it is finalised.
Fitting and adjustment
The finished denture is fitted. Review appointments to relieve pressure spots over the following weeks are a normal, expected part of the process.
Why it is worth doing
- Restores the ability to chew a normal range of food
- Supports the lips and cheeks, restoring facial appearance
- Improves clarity of speech affected by missing teeth
- Partial dentures stop remaining teeth drifting into gaps
- The most economical way to replace several teeth at once
Aftercare
- Expect an adjustment period of a few weeks, so start with soft food cut small
- Remove and clean the denture after meals; brush it with soap and water, not toothpaste, which scratches
- Leave it out overnight in water so the tissues can recover
- Return for adjustments rather than enduring sore spots or filing it yourself
- Ridges change shape over time, so dentures need relining or remaking every few years
Dentures (Complete & Partial): common questions
The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.
Most people need a few weeks. Speech usually adapts within days, and reading aloud speeds it up considerably. Chewing takes longer; start with soft foods cut small and progress gradually.
Lower dentures have far less surface area to grip and are constantly displaced by the tongue and cheeks, so they are inherently less stable than uppers. If it is a persistent problem, two implants to anchor the denture make an enormous difference.
A well-fitting new denture should not need adhesive. If yours only works with adhesive, the fit needs assessing. It usually means the denture needs relining or the ridge has changed shape.
Typically 5 to 8 years. The denture itself may still look fine, but the jaw ridge underneath continues to resorb, so the fit deteriorates and it needs relining or remaking.
