A digital dental X-ray replaces old film with a sensor that sends the image straight to a screen. It takes seconds, uses a fraction of the radiation of conventional film, and, most importantly, means you can see what we see.
Almost every problem in dentistry starts below the surface. Decay between two teeth, infection at the tip of a root, bone loss from gum disease, an impacted wisdom tooth: none of these are visible to the naked eye until they are advanced. Imaging is how we catch them while they are still small and inexpensive to treat.
Signs you may need this
- You have not had a dental check-up in over a year
- Persistent sensitivity or pain with no visible cause
- Swelling, or a gum boil that comes and goes
- Before any root canal, extraction, implant or orthodontic treatment
What happens during your appointment
Positioning
A small digital sensor is placed inside your mouth, or an external unit is positioned beside your jaw. A lead apron is used as standard.
Exposure
The exposure lasts a fraction of a second. There is no sensation and no waiting for film to develop.
Reading the image together
The image appears immediately on the chairside screen. Dr. Jahnvi walks you through it: what is healthy, what is not, and what it means for your treatment plan.
Why it is worth doing
- Up to 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays
- Image available on screen in seconds, no development delay
- Can be magnified and enhanced to spot early decay
- Stored digitally, so changes can be compared visit to visit
- No chemical processing, so no chemical waste
Digital Dental X-Ray: common questions
The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.
Yes. A digital dental X-ray delivers a very small dose of radiation, considerably less than a day of ordinary background radiation you receive from the environment. A protective lead apron is used, and we only take images that are clinically necessary.
Routine X-rays are usually postponed until after delivery. If imaging is genuinely necessary, for example an infection that needs urgent treatment, it can be taken safely with proper shielding. Always tell us if you are pregnant or think you may be.
For most adults with healthy teeth, once every 12 to 24 months alongside a routine check-up. If you have active decay, gum disease, or ongoing treatment, we may image more frequently.
