A child's first experience at a dental clinic shapes how they feel about dentists for the rest of their life. We take that seriously. The first visit is usually just a ride in the chair, a count of the teeth, and a look around, no instruments, no pressure.

Clinically, children's teeth need attention in their own right. Milk teeth hold space for the permanent teeth developing beneath them; losing one early can crowd the adult tooth that follows. Decay also spreads faster through the thinner enamel of a milk tooth than through an adult one.

Signs you may need this

  • Your child has never been to a dentist and is over one year old
  • Brown or white spots on their teeth
  • Complaints of pain, or avoiding chewing on one side
  • Thumb-sucking beyond age four, or persistent mouth breathing
  • A milk tooth lost early through decay or injury

What happens during your appointment

  1. Getting comfortable

We show before we do: the chair, the mirror, the little water sprayer. Children are told what will happen in words they understand, without frightening vocabulary.

  2. Examination

A gentle check of every tooth, the bite, and how the permanent teeth are developing underneath.

  3. Preventive treatment

Fluoride application to strengthen enamel, and pit-and-fissure sealants on the deep grooves of new molars where decay almost always starts.

  4. Treatment if needed

Fillings, pulpectomy or space maintainers as required, always explained to both parent and child first.

  5. Coaching the parent

Practical guidance on brushing technique, bottle habits, sugar timing and thumb-sucking, matched to your child's age.

Why it is worth doing

  • Builds a positive association with dental care early
  • Sealants and fluoride prevent decay before it starts
  • Protects the space milk teeth hold for permanent teeth
  • Catches bite and alignment problems while they are easy to guide
  • Parents get straight, practical advice, not lectures

Aftercare

  • Brush twice daily with an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste: a smear under 3, a pea-sized amount after
  • Brush your child's teeth for them until around age 7
  • Sugar frequency matters more than quantity, so limit it to mealtimes
  • No bottle or sweetened milk in bed after teeth have come through
  • Check-ups every six months

Child Dentistry: common questions

The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.

By their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. That first visit is about familiarity and prevention advice rather than treatment.

Yes. A decayed milk tooth causes real pain, can abscess, and can damage the permanent tooth forming directly beneath it. Losing one too early also lets neighbouring teeth drift into the space, crowding the adult tooth that was meant to come through there.

We go slower. The first appointment may be nothing more than sitting in the chair and counting teeth. We use tell-show-do, avoid frightening words, and never restrain a frightened child. It sometimes takes two or three short visits to build trust. That is time well spent.

A thin protective coating flowed into the deep grooves on the chewing surface of new permanent molars. Those grooves are narrower than a toothbrush bristle, so they cannot be cleaned properly. Sealing them prevents the majority of childhood decay.
