Teeth darken over time. Tea, coffee, tobacco, paan and simply ageing all deepen the shade of enamel and the dentin beneath it. Professional whitening uses a controlled peroxide gel to break down the pigment molecules trapped inside the tooth.

The difference between professional and over-the-counter whitening is supervision. Before we whiten anything, we check that the discolouration is actually a staining problem and not decay, a dying nerve, or exposed root surface, because whitening those makes them worse, not better. We also protect your gums, control the concentration, and manage sensitivity.

Signs you may need this

  • Teeth have yellowed gradually over years
  • Heavy tea, coffee, tobacco or paan staining
  • An upcoming wedding, engagement or event
  • You feel self-conscious about your smile in photographs

What happens during your appointment

  1. Shade assessment

We record your starting shade against a standard guide so the result is measurable, and check for decay or exposed roots that must be treated first.

  2. Cleaning first

Whitening is done after scaling and polishing. Gel cannot penetrate through a layer of plaque and tartar, and whitening over it gives a patchy result.

  3. Gum protection

A protective barrier is placed over the gums so the whitening gel only contacts enamel.

  4. Gel application

The whitening gel is applied and left for a set time, usually in two or three cycles within the same appointment.

  5. Result and maintenance

We record the final shade, review the difference with you, and go through what to avoid over the next 48 hours while the enamel rehydrates.

Why it is worth doing

  • Visible improvement of several shades in a single appointment
  • Supervised, so gums are protected and concentration is controlled
  • Sensitivity is managed with desensitising agents before and after
  • Existing decay and gum problems are screened first
  • A far more predictable result than over-the-counter kits

Aftercare

  • Avoid tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric, beetroot and tobacco for 48 hours, because enamel is temporarily more porous
  • Use a desensitising toothpaste for a week if teeth feel sensitive
  • Sensitivity after whitening is common and settles within a few days
  • Results typically last 12 to 24 months depending on diet and smoking

Teeth Whitening: common questions

The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.

Professionally supervised whitening at controlled concentrations does not damage enamel. What causes harm is unsupervised use of high-concentration or unregulated products, and acidic 'natural' remedies like lemon juice or vinegar, which genuinely do erode enamel permanently.

No. Whitening only works on natural tooth structure. Crowns, veneers and composite fillings keep their existing shade, which is why, if you plan to whiten and also replace a front filling or crown, we whiten first and match the new work to your new shade.

Typically 12 to 24 months. It depends heavily on how much tea, coffee and tobacco you consume afterwards. Occasional top-up sessions maintain the result.

The gel temporarily opens microscopic tubules in the dentin, which makes the nerve more responsive to temperature. It is temporary and settles within a few days. Desensitising toothpaste shortens it further.
