Plaque that isn't brushed away hardens into calculus, or tartar, within about 48 hours. Once hardened, it bonds to the tooth surface and no amount of brushing will remove it. It has to be taken off professionally.

This matters because tartar sits at the gum line and holds bacteria against the gum, causing the inflammation, bleeding and eventual bone loss we call gum disease. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, ahead of decay, and in its early stages it is completely reversible with a professional clean.

Signs you may need this

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath that returns quickly after brushing
  • A rough, gritty feeling along the gum line
  • Visible yellow or brown deposits near the gums
  • Gums that look red or puffy rather than firm and pink

What happens during your appointment

  1. Examination

We check gum health, measure any pockets around the teeth, and identify where deposits have built up.

  2. Ultrasonic scaling

An ultrasonic scaler vibrates the hardened deposits away using high-frequency vibration and a water spray. It is far gentler than manual scraping.

  3. Hand finishing

Finer deposits below the gum line and between teeth are removed with hand instruments where the ultrasonic tip cannot reach.

  4. Polishing

A rotating soft cup and polishing paste smooth the tooth surface. A smoother surface gives plaque less to hold onto, so it takes longer to build up again.

Why it is worth doing

  • Stops and reverses early gum disease (gingivitis)
  • Removes tea, coffee, tobacco and paan staining
  • Eliminates a major cause of persistent bad breath
  • Lets us catch decay early while it is still small
  • Protects the bone that holds your teeth in place

Aftercare

  • Mild sensitivity for a day or two is normal, especially to cold
  • Avoid strongly staining food and drink for 24 hours
  • Brush twice daily for two full minutes with a soft brush
  • Clean between teeth daily. This is where gum disease starts
  • Return every six months so deposits never get a chance to build

Teeth Scaling & Polishing: common questions

The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.

No. This is the most common myth in dentistry. Scaling removes tartar, not tooth. If teeth feel slightly loose or gaps feel more open afterwards, it is because heavy tartar was splinting them and filling spaces the gum disease had already created. Removing it lets the gum heal and tighten back around the tooth.

For most people it is not painful. You feel vibration and cool water. If your gums are very inflamed or there are deep deposits below the gum line, we can use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.

Every six months for most people. If you smoke, have diabetes, or have a history of gum disease, every three to four months is safer.

It removes surface stains from tea, coffee and tobacco, so teeth usually look noticeably brighter and cleaner. It does not change the natural underlying shade of the tooth. That requires whitening.
