A veneer is a thin shell of ceramic bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It changes the shape, shade, length and alignment of what people actually see when you smile, without touching the back of the tooth at all.
Veneers are the tool behind most smile makeovers, but the honest version of this treatment starts with restraint. Preparing a tooth for a veneer is irreversible, and over-preparing healthy front teeth is one of the most common regrets in cosmetic dentistry. Where a case can be solved with whitening, composite bonding or aligning the teeth first, we will tell you that.
When veneers genuinely are the right answer, the result should look like your teeth on their best day, not like a set of identical white rectangles.
Signs you may need this
- Chipped, worn or uneven front teeth
- Discolouration that whitening cannot correct, such as tetracycline staining
- Small gaps between front teeth
- Teeth that are slightly rotated or misshapen
- An upcoming wedding or event with a fixed timeline
What happens during your appointment
Smile design consultation
Photographs, shade selection and a discussion of proportion, tooth shape and how much change you actually want. Wanting a natural result is a valid goal and we will design for it.
Preparation
A very thin layer of enamel is removed, often under a millimetre, to make room for the veneer so it does not sit bulky.
Impression and temporaries
An impression or digital scan goes to the laboratory. Temporary veneers let you preview the shape and live with it before the final ones are made.
Try-in and bonding
The finished veneers are tried in with a trial paste so you can approve them in a mirror in natural light, then bonded permanently.
Why it is worth doing
- Corrects shade, shape, chips, wear and small gaps at once
- Ceramic resists staining better than natural enamel
- Minimal tooth preparation compared with a full crown
- Dramatic, predictable improvement in a short timeframe
- Designed to your face and proportions, not a stock template
Aftercare
- Do not bite nails, open packaging with your teeth, or chew ice, ceramic is strong but brittle at the edges
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth; this is non-negotiable for protecting veneers
- Clean the gum margin thoroughly, because the tooth underneath can still decay
- Avoid heavily staining habits; the cement margin can discolour over time
Veneers & Laminates: common questions
The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.
Preparation is irreversible. A thin layer of enamel is permanently removed, so the tooth will always need to be covered from then on. That is precisely why we are conservative about recommending them, and why we will suggest whitening, bonding or alignment first when those can achieve your goal.
Typically 10 to 15 years with good care. They can chip or debond, particularly if you grind your teeth or use your front teeth as tools.
Only if they are designed that way. Natural teeth are not uniform. They vary slightly in shade, have translucency at the edges and subtle surface texture. A good laboratory reproduces that. We will show you the design and the temporaries before anything is finalised.
A veneer covers only the front surface and requires minimal preparation, suitable when the tooth is fundamentally sound. A crown covers the whole tooth and is needed when the tooth is significantly broken down, root-treated or heavily filled.
