Costs

How treatment is costed

You will not find a price list on this page, and the reason for that is the point of the page. What you will find is exactly when you are told the cost, how firm that figure is, and what happens if it changes.

The whole plan and the whole cost, in writing, before anything starts

No procedure is added part way through without your consent. No treatment is recommended that would not be recommended to a member of the family. If a filling will do, you will not be sold a crown, and if a tooth can be saved, saving it is what gets suggested first.

The sequence

When you actually find out what it costs

In that order, and with a decision point before any money is spent on treatment.

  1. 1

    You describe the problem

On WhatsApp or on the phone. At this stage you can be told what the likely options are and which tend to cost more than others. You cannot be told a figure, and you should be wary of anywhere that gives you one.

  2. 2

You are examined, and usually X-rayed

This is the step that turns a guess into a number. A digital X-ray takes seconds and goes up on the screen next to you, so you see the same thing the dentist is looking at rather than being told about it.

  3. 3

You are given the plan and the cost, written down

Every item, what each one is for, and what the total comes to. If there is more than one reasonable way to treat it, you get both, with the difference between them explained rather than just the recommended one.

  4. 4

You decide, and you can decide later

Taking the plan away to think about it, to discuss it at home, or to show another dentist is a normal thing to do and nobody will make it awkward. Except in a genuine emergency, almost nothing in dentistry has to be decided the same hour.

  5. 5

Treatment starts, at the figure you agreed

If something is found along the way that changes it, work stops and you are asked before it continues.

What moves the number

Why the same treatment costs different amounts

Not a hedge. These are the things that genuinely differ from one mouth to the next, and knowing them makes it much easier to tell a fair quote from a bad one, here or anywhere else.

Which tooth it is

A front tooth has one canal. A molar at the back can have four, sits where it is hard to reach, and takes considerably longer. The same words on a treatment plan can mean quite different amounts of work.

How much tooth is left

A small cavity is a filling. The same tooth left for two years may need a root canal and a crown to rebuild something that was once a twenty minute appointment. This is the single biggest driver, and it is the one thing that is still in the patient's control.

The material used

Crowns, fillings and dentures all come in a range. The differences are real, in how they look and how long they last, and you get told what those differences are rather than simply being given the most expensive one.

How many visits it needs

Some treatments can be completed in one appointment and some genuinely cannot, because healing has to happen in between. An implant is the clearest example: much of the time in it is waiting, not working.

Whether there is infection

An infected tooth usually has to be brought under control before the definitive treatment can be done properly. That is an extra step, and it is why leaving something until it flares up rarely turns out cheaper.

What else is going on

Treating one tooth in a mouth that needs a general clean first is not the same job as treating it in a healthy mouth. The plan says which parts are urgent and which can be staged over time.

Worth knowing

Signs you are being oversold, at any clinic

Including this one. If any of these happen here, say so, and if the answer is unsatisfactory then go elsewhere.

  • A treatment plan that appears without an examination or an X-ray behind it
  • Being told a decision has to be made today, when there is no pain and no swelling
  • A quote that changes upwards once treatment is already under way, without being discussed first
  • Several teeth crowned when only one of them was causing a problem
  • Being discouraged from taking the plan away, or from getting a second opinion
  • Cosmetic work suggested for a problem you came in about that was not cosmetic

A second opinion is not an insult and no reasonable dentist treats it as one. Dr. Jahnvi will give you the plan in writing to take elsewhere if you ask, and will look at a plan you have been given somewhere else if you bring it in.

Common questions

Asked about cost

Because any number written here would be a guess, and a guess that turns out to be wrong is worse than no number at all. The cost of a filling depends on how much tooth is left, the cost of a root canal depends on which tooth and how many canals it has, and neither can be known from a description over a message. You are given the full figure after the examination and before anything is started.

Ask when you book and you will be told plainly, before you come in, rather than finding out at the desk afterwards. Nothing about how this clinic charges is designed to be a surprise.

We can usually tell you what the likely options are and which of them is generally the more expensive, which is often what people actually want to know. What we will not do is name a figure for a tooth nobody has looked at, because you would reasonably hold us to it and it would not be fair to either of us.

Then it stops and you are asked. Occasionally something is found under a filling or on an X-ray that changes the plan, and if that happens the new plan and the new cost are explained before any further work is done. Nothing is added to a treatment already in progress without your agreement.

For longer courses of treatment, such as implants or a full mouth rehabilitation, payment is usually staged across the appointments rather than taken all at once. Ask at the planning appointment and it will be set out with the plan.

Bring your policy details to the consultation. Cover varies a great deal between policies and what yours includes is best checked against the actual treatment plan rather than in advance of it.

Yes, in both directions. If you have a plan from another clinic and want it looked at, bring it. If you want to take our plan elsewhere before deciding, that is entirely reasonable and you will be given it in writing to take with you.
