A titanium root placed in the jaw to replace a missing tooth permanently, the closest thing modern dentistry has to growing a new one.

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to take the place of a missing tooth root. Over the following months the bone fuses directly to its surface, a process called osseointegration, creating a foundation as stable as a natural root. A crown is then attached on top.
What makes an implant different from a bridge or a denture is that it replaces the root, not just the visible tooth. That matters because jawbone only maintains itself when it is loaded. Leave a gap and the bone in that area gradually shrinks away, which changes facial support over the years. An implant keeps that bone working.
Dr. Jahnvi is certified in implant dentistry, and every case is planned from digital imaging before anything surgical begins.
Signs you may need this
- A single missing tooth with healthy neighbours
- Several missing teeth in a row
- A denture that moves, rocks or has stopped fitting
- A tooth about to be extracted, where you want to plan ahead
What happens during your appointment
Assessment and planning
Digital imaging assesses bone height, width and density, and the position of the nerve and sinus. Your general health and any medications are reviewed. This planning stage determines the outcome.
Implant placement
Under local anaesthetic, the implant is placed into prepared bone. Most patients are surprised at how straightforward this appointment is compared with an extraction.
Healing and integration
Over 3 to 6 months the bone grows onto the implant surface. A temporary tooth can usually be provided during this period so you are never without one visibly.
Abutment and crown
Once integrated, a connector is attached and an impression taken for the final crown, made to match your natural teeth.
Fitting and maintenance
The crown is fitted and the bite checked. We then set up a maintenance schedule, because implants need professional cleaning just as teeth do.
Why it is worth doing
- Replaces the root, so the jawbone is preserved rather than shrinking
- Does not require cutting down the healthy teeth either side
- Fixed permanently, with nothing removed at night and no movement while eating
- Restores close to full natural chewing force
- With good maintenance, can last decades
Aftercare
- Follow post-surgical instructions exactly for the first 48 hours
- Cold, soft food and no chewing on the site while it heals
- Do not smoke, because smoking is the largest single risk factor for implant failure
- Clean around the implant meticulously once healed; peri-implantitis is the main long-term threat
- Attend maintenance appointments, because implants need monitoring for life
Implant Dentistry: common questions
The questions patients actually ask about this treatment, answered without the parts that only apply to someone else's case.
The placement is done under local anaesthetic and most patients report it as easier than the extraction that preceded it. Mild soreness and swelling for two to three days afterwards is typical and manageable with ordinary painkillers.
Usually 3 to 6 months from placement to final crown, because the bone needs time to fuse to the implant. If a bone graft is needed first, add a few months. You are not left with a visible gap during this time.
With good hygiene and regular maintenance, implants can last decades. Many are still functioning after 20+ years. What causes failure is almost always gum infection around the implant (peri-implantitis) or smoking, not the implant wearing out.
Most people can. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, active gum disease and certain medications affecting bone metabolism need to be assessed and managed first. Insufficient bone volume is usually solvable with grafting. That is exactly what the planning stage is for.
An implant preserves bone and leaves neighbouring teeth untouched, so it is generally the better long-term option when those teeth are healthy. A bridge is faster and can be the right choice when the adjacent teeth already need crowns or when implant surgery is not suitable.
